Course/Catalog Description

ACC1102 Principles of Managerial Accounting
 
How management accounting information can be used to help firms achieve strategic goals and profitability objectives. Use of an entrepreneurial perspective to examine how managers apply risk measurement and management techniques to business planning and control systems. Case-based learning to help students develop communication, technology, and teamwork. Open to all C&F students and Business Minors Pre-requisite: ACC 1101

Course Objectives

By completing this course, students will be able to:

  • understand the differences between financial and managerial accounting

  • understand the basic concepts of management accounting, including: performance measurement, budgeting, product costing, activity-based management, balanced scorecard, cost behavior and using information for decision making

  • prepare a master budget

  • prepare and analyze costing reports

  • perform variance analysis

  • analyze responsibility center performance

  • use financial and non-financial data for decision making

  • estimate how costs behave using regression analysis

  • improve Excel skills

  • understand the social and ethical responsibility of management accountants

Course Grading

Tests - 90% (Best Test - 35%; Second Best Test - 30%; Worst Test - 25%)
Project - 5%
For this project, you are to read the following web article: 30 Days to Success and then choose something you would like to try as your 30 day experiment. The article has many suggestions, but you should pick something that has meaning for you. If you are not sure if something would qualify, just ask.
Class participation, random homework assignments - 5%

Cheating will not be tolerated, for the simple reason that cheating is wrong. Here is the official C&F academic integrity policy: 

The academic integrity policy, which is:  The Code of Academic Integrity of Villanova University addresses cheating, fabrication of submitted work, plagiarism, handing in work completed for another course without the instructor’s approval, and other forms of dishonesty.  For the first offense, a student who violates the Code of Villanova University will receive 0 points for the assignment.  The violation will be reported by the instructor to the Dean’s office and recorded in the student’s file.  In addition, the student will be expected to complete an education program.  For the second offense, the student will be dismissed from the University and the reason noted on the student’s official transcript.
